Lake Natron; Ngorongoro Coservation Area

General: The Ngorongoro Conservation area (See The Map) lies between three lakes within the Rift valley: Lake Natron in the north, Lake Eyasi in the southeast and Lake Magadi within and Lake Manyara to the east they are all famous for water birds, especially lesser flamingos. The largest lake within the Ngorongoro Crater is Lake Magadi or Makat, as Maasai called it with the meaning of salt. Due to deposition of volcanic ash, the lake became alkaline.

There is only one main stream, Munge, which feeds the lake. When water is relatively fresh, especially during the rain season, it is visited by more birds. The lake is not that deep, it is only 3 meters, and during dry season it drop dramatically. What make this lake hotspot is the number of water birds, especially lesser flamingo, who feed here and rest in Lake Natron. The lake shore is a stalking ground for predators especially lions, hyena and golden jackals.

Lake Natron: Located in the southwest of Ngorongoro Conservation Area (See The Map), as other people call it Maasai land and northern Maasai Steppe (Tarangire). The lake is home and breeding place for lesser flamingos, the vast area of the northern Maasai Steppe is famous for its great concentrations of Lesser Kudu, Gerenuk, Grant's and Thompson's Gazelle, Fringe-eared Oryx, Coke's Hartebeest, White-bearded Wildebeest.

Lake Eyasi:  Located south of the Serengeti National Park and immediately southwest of the Ngorongoro (See The Map), is one among several lakes in the floor of the East African Rift Valley. The southwest flank of Ngorongoro Volcano drains into the northeast end of the lake. The lake is generally rectangular, except the indented southeast side, which appears to be shallower owing to the sediment that has filled in the shore. Seasonal water level fluctuations in the lake are dramatic, which is indicating that Lake Eyasi is relatively shallow even during periods of maximum water levels. Lakes in Ngorongoro Conservation Area are regarded to be the largest breeding and feeding places for the greater and lesser flamingo in East Africa.
