Kazimzumbwi are among the oldest forest in the world. Undisturbed
coastal forests have a closed canopy in which a few pioneer species are
found"

The Pugu Forest Reserve, few kilometers off the city, is the
source of Msimbazi River, which run eastwards to the sea at
Dar es Salaam. With Kazimzumbwi Forest Reserve are remnants
of the coastal forests which are rich in endemic plants and
animals. There 14 plants species, two
mammals species and 1 subspecies of birds, which are endemic to
this area. The forest coverage is regarded to be one of the
oldest in the world.

The forest reserves covering a range of low hills running
south-west from
Dar es Salaam, Kazimzumbwi, to the border with
Selous Game Reserve attracting higher rainfall that
precipitate the growth of evergreen forest.

There is a plan to create new National park that would include
Pugu Hills, Kazimzumbwi and Ruvu South. This area of woodland
would be the nearest National Park to Dar es Salaam, which would
contain some families of Elephants, Giraffe, Zebra and Impala,
as well as protecting Crocodile in Ruvu River.

The reserve encloses one of the world’s largest kaolin deposits.
Kisarawe is the nearest town located immediately to the west of
the reserve

The bird-life is excellent, with more than
80 species. Full of fox bats and other forested birds. Barred
Owlet, Bohm’s Spinetail, Thick-billed Cuckoo, Speckle-throated
Woodpecker and Lesser Seedcracker , Green Tinker bird,
Red-tailed Ant Thrush, Fischer’s Greenbuls, Kretchmer’s
Longbill, Little Yellow Flycatcher and Uluguru Violet-backed
Sunbird. Pugu Hill is also famous for Monkeys, snakes, bush pigs
and elephant-shrews, leopards, hyenas and pangolins.

Though there are two well established natural trails for hikers,
the main trail is along the Kisarawe-Kazimzumbwi road. Three
types of Hiking are offered: The view point hike
to see the City and the Indian Ocean; The water reservoir
hike hiking to natural reservoir that once used ;
the cave hike visiting a cave that regarded as a
sacred place for the Wazaramo. Hiking can vary in duration, from
2 to 5 hours.
